Figs comprise a large family of deciduous and evergreen tropical and subtropical trees, shrubs and vines belonging to the mulberry family Moraceae. The most important fig is Ficus carica, the tree that produces the edible fig fruit. Some of the best grow in Turkey, Cyprus.
Figs like heat. The color is green, violet, bronze, brown, dark purple or mixed. Ripeness is essential, yet a ripe fig is so vulnerable and the time between ripeness and decay is so short that ripe fig can’t be shipped. It lasts only hours. Part of the wonder of the fig comes from its unique taste and texture.
