Some people think Figs are wonderful; others find them inexplicable. The fig is one of mankind’s oldest and the most significant fruit in history. FIGS-The World’s Healthiest Foods 

There are several references in the Bible to figs. They are thought to have been first cultivated in Egypt. Figs were Cleopatra’s favorite fruit. The Assyrians used figs as sweeteners as back as 3000 BC.

FIG FACT-Many believe it was figs ( not apples ) that were actually the fruit in the Garden of Eden with Adam and Eve.

Figs comprise a large family of deciduous and evergreen tropical and subtropical trees, shrubs and vines belonging to the mulberry family Moraceae. The most important fig is Ficus carica, the tree that produces the edible fig fruit. Some of the best grow in Turkey, Cyprus.

Figs like heat. The color is green, violet, bronze, brown, dark purple or mixed. Ripeness is essential, yet a ripe fig is so vulnerable and the time between ripeness and decay is so short that ripe fig can’t be shipped. It lasts only hours. Part of the wonder of the fig comes from its unique taste and texture.

One reason that people in United States don’t eat a lot of figs is that they’re not sure what to do with them. An easy way to get more of this fiber rich food in your diet is to add it to foods that need a touch of sweetness, like cereals or oatmeal.

For the most antioxidants, choose fully ripened figs: They’re good caramelized. Avoid figs with a smell of fermentation.

TIPS:

  • Fig puree can be used to replace fat in baked goods
  • When dried figs have their own benefits-they have a high fiber, vitamin and mineral content.
  • Shop for texture, Figs whether dried or fresh, should be firm to the touch. If they seem mushy they are probably too old.
  • Eat then fast. Fresh figs go bad very quickly, within a week after leaving the tree. They’ll stay fresh for about three days when stored in the refrigerator in an airtight bag.
  • The most common reason for a fig tree not producing fruit is simply its age.
